Glencairn Museum mounts an exhibition of 20 paintings and drawings by the late Bryn Athyn artist and arts instructor Nishan Yardumian (1947-1986). "A Show More...Window to the Soul: Nishan Yardumian's Biblical Art" opens Sunday, April 22, during the Museum's annual Sacred Arts Festival and continues through Sunday, November 4, in Glencairn's Upper Hall exhibition space.
Yardumian taught painting in Bryn Athyn for many years, at both the Academy of the New Church Secondary Schools and Bryn Athyn College. A painter as well as a teacher, he was passionate about both professions. According to Yardumian, "Painting aims at the universal with the hopes that each individual can find his identification with it. Teaching aims at the individual with the hope of developing the universal."
Siri Hurst, Nishan Yardumian's widow, who owns many pieces of her late husband's work, says, "For the past five years, as I've taken a day each summer to archive Nishan's remaining art work, I noticed how he was drawn to the subject of 'heavenly appearances.' This theme coincided with my own philosophic reflections on how appearances reveal but also conceal, and this led me to suggest to Glencairn an exhibit that could include this theme.
"Two pieces in this exhibition are favorites of mine. I love 'Bethlehem' because it illustrates a story we can all relate to, of an idea-something of God-that is born within us. 'Annunciation to Shepherds' shows movement: Nishan saw the angel as 'appearing' and changing us, and the drama such change can represent.
"When I modeled for Nishan, I would watch his eyes. The intensity made me feel he was probing an idea beyond the observation. He often said, 'In the end it is not what we paint pictures of, but what we paint pictures from.' I think the key to understanding his art is to realize from what he painted.
"Nishan was deeply spiritual, and saw the discipline of painting and drawing as analogous to the struggle to see the truth. He said, 'Paintings don't re-direct the wind; they realign the heart.'
"He loved to paint stories from the Bible because of what they mean in our lives. Although religious imagery wasn't popular in the art world of his day [1970s and '80s], his work found a receptive home at Glencairn Museum whose mission supports an appreciation for our common spiritual history."
"Yardumian liked the idea that just as an artwork reflects and shapes the values of a home, a museum reflects and shapes the values of a community," says Dr. Martha Gyllenhaal, a close friend of Yardumian and currently Associate Professor of Art and Art History and head of the Art Department at Bryn Athyn College. She was exhibit coordinator for Glencairn's first solo Nishan Yardumian exhibition in 1987, a year after his death.
"So it is fitting that a number of homes have lent their cherished Biblical paintings to Glencairn Museum [for this exhibition]. Yardumian thought that attending an art exhibit is a reciprocal act between the artist and viewer: each brings their best self to the process, which results in a marvelous exchange of insights."
While there is no charge to view "A Window to the Soul," donations are accepted and access is included in tour and event admission.
Besides stated times, visitors may call for an appointment and when attending the Sacred Arts and Medieval Festivals. The exhibition is closed April 29 and May 26 for two concerts and on July 4.. ...Show Less

At the turn of the century, artists began to rebel against traditional modes of expression and exhibition. Although it is frequently associated with Impressionism, Show More...the Delaware Valley region launched some of the most important developments that transformed American art in the 20th century: the roots of the Ashcan School; the leading proponents of Precisionist painting; and some of the first artists to explore non-objective painting.
A remarkable gift of 27 works from Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest in 1999 enabled the Michener Art Museum to highlight the significant contributions to the development of modern art in America as seen through the prism of our region. Artists such as Charles Frederick Ramsey, Louis Stone, Charles Evans, Lloyd Ney, and Charles Rosen were actively engaged in the artistic dialogue that resulted in major shifts in American art at mid-century. For the first time in thirty years, these works will be on view together in one gallery, underscoring the lasting contributions of our region's artists to the evolution of 20th-century American art.. ...Show Less

Henry Bayley Snell (1858-1943) was born and raised in Richmond, England but emigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen to study at the Art Show More...Students League in New York. Snell was an eminent landscape painter who specialized in marine paintings and was part of the New Hope School of landscape painters, first arriving in Bucks County to visit William L. Lathrop and his family. Snell and his wife permanently settled in New Hope around 1925 with Snell teaching portraiture at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, often supplementing students' education by bringing them to the St. Ives artist colony in Cornwall for the summer.
Snell's drawings and watercolors of his travels to Cornwall and beyond are a special part of the Michener's collection of impressionist works on paper. As many of these works on paper have never been exhibited at the Museum, Impressions on Paper: Henry Snell offers both a special glimpse at the treasures in the Michener's vault as well as a scholarly examination of a regional painter capturing impressions abroad.. ...Show Less

September 4th- October 28th
Artist reception- Friday, September 7th from 6 PM - 9 PM
Some energies shroud in the shadows while some shine strong Show More...and brightly, such are the forces that push and pull amongst us. From toxic foes to altruistic Samaritans, we are surrounded by other's motives, left to our own volition in the aftermath. It is up to us to wither under, thrive on, possibly even pass along. With personal reflection, what side of the line do we stand on, with the healers and do-gooders or with the cruel and mischievous?
Poisons and Antidotes present the duality of the damages and the remedies. A collection of artist portrayals of malicious intents and selfless healers throughout history, in the myths, as well in our contemporary times. From symbols to epic stories to iconic embodiments of the deeper workings within the human spirit and the physical. The rain can heal and nourish some, while others writhe in pain.

Open to the public; please join us for the opening reception for a first look and to meet the artists for personal insights into their striking work. Wine and light fare will be served compliments of awarding winning JPM Catering.

Delaware Valley University will host a special exhibit, celebrating the work of ceramic artist Jim Lard. The wood-fired porcelain and stoneware ceramics Show entitled, "com-ple-men-tar-i-ty," will open Aug. 1 and run through Nov. 2 in the University's Life Sciences Building.
"We are excited to show the work of Jim Lard in the Life Sciences Building gallery as part of the University's Arts on Campus initiative," said DelVal Director of Continuing and Professional Studies Admission Linda Lefevre. "DelVal is planning to offer additional exhibits, and we hope to enrich the campus and the community by bringing in a variety of artists."
Lard, who is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, earned his MFA from Louisiana Tech University, where here studied both furniture design and ceramics. He has taught at Harrisburg Area Community College since 1993, where he was a department chair from 1995 to 2002. Lard's work can be found in numerous public and private collections. His most recent commission, for a wall relief, can be seen at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Lard considers himself a "maker." He is known for his keen material sensibility and an appreciation for fine craft. His aesthetic sensibility and visual vocabulary are informed by the incredible wonder of nature, as well as music, dance, and architecture. Lard said he appreciates and seeks to convey visually, things that simply cannot be communicated otherwise.
The exhibit will be open to the public at no cost Aug. 1 through Nov. 2. Guests do not need to register in advance. The work will be on display on the second floor of the Life Sciences Building.. ...Show Less

What happens at a Mini Prix?
Horse show jumpers are scored objectively, based entirely on a numerical score determined only by whether the horse attempts the obstacle, clears it, and finishes the course in the allotted time. Jumper courses tend to be complex and technical because riders and horses are not being judged on style. A jumper must jump big, bravely, and fast but also must be careful and accurate to avoid knockdowns and must be balanced and rideable in order to rate and turn accurately. The rider must choose the best line to each fence, saving ground with well-planned turns, and lines and must adjust the horse's stride for each fence and distance. In a jump-off, a rider must balance the need to go as fast as possible and turn as tightly as possible against the horse's ability to jump cleanly with good scope. (Wikipedia)
